Heiwa Terrace Chronology         
  • 1975
    • Questionnaire sent to Chicago’s Japanese American Community to survey interest in congregate housing for senior citizens. Positive interest and support received.

  • 1976
    • Application submitted to HUD for 100 percent financing under Section 202/8.

  • 1977
    • Fund-raising campaign launched in Japanese American community, resulting in contributions totaling $180,000

    • Federal government approves $6.4million loan for 200-unit, 12-story building under Section 202 of Housing and Community Development Act of 1974.

  • 1978
    • July 18 Groundbreaking launches construction.

  • 1980
    • April: First six residents move in with influx of residents continuing throughout summer.

  • 1981
    • Meal service- 3 times-a-week dinner service begun. Social service     coordinator added to on-site staff.

  • 1982
    • September 10: Japanese garden dedicated.

  • 1986
    • June 14: Dedication of Mas Nakagawa memorial sculpture

  • 1990
    • September 16: Tenth Anniversary Open House

  • 1995
    • July 16: Fifteenth Anniversary Open House

  • 2000
    • October 22: Twentieth Anniversary Open House

  • 2005
    • October 16: Twentyfifth Anniversary Open House

  • 2010
    • May 22: Thirtieth Anniversary Open House
