Our Mission

To provide seniors and disabled persons with housing and services, especially designed to meet their physical, social, and psychological needs. Our goal is to provide an overall quality of life by promoting health and safety. We devote ourselves to maintain and operate our facility on a nonprofit basis.

About Heiwa Terrace

The Japanese American Service Committee Housing Corporation ("Heiwa Terrace") is a not-for-profit corporation whose purpose is to provide subsidized housing for seniors and disabled persons who require wheelchair accessible unit.

Heiwa Terrace does not discriminate in its selection of prospective applicants and is bound by federal rules and guidelines.

Heiwa Terrace is recognized by the HUD office as one of the top senior housing buildings in the City of Chicago.

Heiwa Terrace is located on the corner of Sheridan Road and Lawrence Avenue (920 W Lawrence Avenue) in Chicago.

Heiwa Terrace owner/agent does not discriminate on the basis of disability status in the admission or access to, or treatment or employment in, its federally assisted programs and activities.

Questionnaire sent to Chicago’s Japanese American Community to survey interest in congregate housing for senior citizens. Positive interest and support received.


Application submitted to HUD for 100 percent financing under Section 202/8.


Fund-raising campaign launched in Japanese American community, resulting in contributions totaling $180,000

Federal government approves $6.4million loan for 200-unit, 12-story building under Section 202 of Housing and Community Development Act of 1974.


July 18 Groundbreaking launches construction.
